The career you had in mind might not be going upto your expectations; you might have got bored of your current job and desperately seeking a challenge; or you are finally looking to go after your dream- the reasons for a career change can be many.

Career change is very different from a job change. While the latter involves change of an office and an environment, the former involves change of your entire ecosystem. Thus, if you are looking for a career change, you need to make sure you have thought it through. Here are some tips for those who are thinking of switching careers:

Do enough research in the field you are jumping to

You have set your sights on a new career that looks challenging and exciting. However, before you make the jump, make sure you have gathered enough information about the field. Look at the opportunities in the field 5 years down the line and gauge whether it meets your expectations. Talk to people already working in the industry and the only reach a final decision.

A bird in hand is worth two in the bush

Many times, we tend to have an adrenaline rush when thinking of switching careers. That is more true of men than women. We leave our current job in the hope that we will find the next one on a new industry in a jiffy. However, an adrenaline backed decision like that could prove to be disastrous. Do not make the mistake of leaving your current job without being sure enough that you are ready to make a career switch. Even when you think you are ready, make sure you have enough reserve cash to survive in the waiting period between career change.

Start building contacts

To get into an industry, having the right contacts helps. Start building your network much before you plan to make the switch. Participate in offline meets and network online too. You never know who might help you out in making the right start in a new industry.

Focus on skills you can use

Some skills are universal. They can be used in a number of industries. For example, good communication skills are always required in every industry. The same goes for computer skills in the tech-savvy world of today. While preparing your resume for the new career, make sure you highlight such skills in order to grab the attention of your employers.

Look beyond the glam

Many times, the success of others is what attracts to an industry. However, adopting such an approach is not always good. When it comes to a career, you must always choose a field that is in sync with your skills and your interests. Never make the mistake of choosing an industry just because one of your friends is making a killing in it.

Keep the above tips in mind while changing careers and you shall sail through the transition phase.
